Imaging the EU in one image is a difficult task.  The EU is a set of agreements of a growing union. This political concept is at a far distance of the citizens themselves. If we can't relate to it, we won't be able to influence it either.

In may 2004 the EU got 10 new member-states. Including Estonia, where I had never been and where I hardly new much about. The invitation of Kristjan Mändmaa (designer and teacher) to give a workshop at the Estonian Academy of Arts was the most welcome request. I asked the graphic design students to map the EU on their own way; political, critical, poetical, formal, negative or positive. Personal involvement always as a point of departure (to stay at a safe distance of the magnetic fields of the mass media). The work of students was amazing. It provided unexpected views and opinions on the EU. It all was bound together in the the 'Subjective Atlas of the EU, from an Estonian point of view', which was printed in Tallinn and presented together with an exhibition at the art-school. The students had made A0-posters according to the idea they had developed for their contribution to the atlas. The whole workshop (including printing and the opening of the exhibition) lasted only 3 weeks.
