| Atlas nominated for the INDEX design Awards 2009 October 2008
|
INDEX: AWARD
INDEX: AWARD is the largest monetary design award in the world and is presented every two years in Copenhagen. An award is given in five categories, and INDEX: awards the winner in each category with a prize of €100 000. Holding our collective conscience hostage ever since 1948. International design awards are generally assessing design only according to form. INDEX: on the other hand because of our focus on design to Improve Life - assesses design also according to its impact and its context. We do this to highlight the true potential of design and the broader scope of the design discipline. |

| Work of the atlas is exhibited at 'Colour Siege' in Gaza. October 2008
|
Colour Siege An International Contemporary art Exhibit in Gaza 26-28 October,2008, Community Of Mental Health Programme (GCMHP), Gaza "We may not find explanation to the meaning of siege. I have searched a lot in all the dictionaries I knew and I can't find a meaning for it. I have searched for a picture or even shape for this gelatinous thing which choked our buds and Souls. It chained our love to the extent that I could not find any meaning or reason for the slow death which grow up in our roots, for this oppression, for this fatal Silence. Besides, if we take a look for the whole world we will find all the eyes stare on Gaza without any feeling of our death. Without any attempt to save us from this daily guillotine, so we are left alone on the doorstep of death (life)." In Gaza Community Of Mental Health Programme (GCMHP), World Health Organization (WHO), in cooperation with Windows from Gaza for Contemporary Art, this siege is exhibited in its actual shape and from all points of view. Moreover, we show it from the point of view of those who live inside it and know it well, and who hear about it. We will present all these insights in a contemporary artistic manner to reach the whole world. |

| Atlas in exhibition 'Best Book Designs 2007' in Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam 2007 June 2008
|
From the jury-rapport Best Book Design 2007:
Sometimes when you come to judge a book you capitulate straight away purely because of its subject. The Subjective Atlas of Palestine is a case in point. What country appeals more to the imagination than Palestine? Not least because of the constant stream of harrowing images that the media dish up to us almost daily. It is a tragedy that has been holding our collective conscience hostage ever since 1948. In effect, we are now barely able to form any kind of picture of what day-to-day life in Palestine is really like. That brings us straight to what is special about this atlas, which puts the one-sided approach of Western media up for discussion and at the same time gives us a picture of the present state of the country. We see everyday life as it is lived, from the daily bread to the cultural, social and political agenda. Palestinian artists, photographers and designers give a picture of their country that is informative, confrontational, but above all stimulating. So much information in a modest little book whose design is itself almost invisible. There are no expansive gestures or clever printing tricks here: that is not what this book is about. Excellent picture editing means that the qualitatively very variable pictorial matter takes on an unobtrusive and almost natural unity and coherence. The spacious margins create an impression of openness. Format and typography are restrained yet in no way flat. The rounded corners and the fact that the running text is printed in a mild grey add extra emphasis to the friendly character of the design. A remarkable document that speaks softly to convey an important message. |

Zie: www.vpro.nl/deavonden |

Events, ranging from movie screenings to guerilla theatre, from panel discussions to a Palestinian hip-hop concert will shed light on the United States’ role in the conflict and aims to help expose the harsh realities of life under occupation.... [more]
The artwork on our publicity materials is the work of Palestinian artists Majdi Hadid, Awatef Rumiyah and Majd Abdel, initially published in the Subjective Atlas of Palestine. The artists have graciously allowed us to use these powerful pieces for Palestine Week to aid in efforts to communicate their humanity through visual media." |
